    Integrating hot and cool intelligences: Thinking Broadly about Broad Abilities

    Although results from factor-analytic studies of the broad, second-stratum abilities of human intelligence have been fairly consistent for decades, the list of broad abilities is far from complete, much less understood. We propose criteria by which the list of broad abilities could be amended and envision alternatives for how our understanding of the hot intelligences (abilities involving emotionally-salient information) and cool intelligences (abilities involving perceptual processing and logical reasoning) might be integrated into a coherent theoretical framework

    Assessment of the LC-2 Prelaunch Fatigue Spectra of the CM-to-SM Flange Weld

    The pad stay and rollout components of the Ares I-X life cycle can generate cyclic stress oscillations to the vehicle that could initiate and grow fatigue cracks from weld defects. The Ares I-X Project requested that a study be performed to determine if stabilization of the vehicle is required to reduce the stresses that could initiate and grow fatigue cracks at the flange-to-skin weld of the Command Module (CM) and Service Module (SM) interface. A fatigue crack growth analysis was conducted that used loads (LC-2) and stress analyses developed by the Ares I-X Project and utilized material data and analysis methods developed by a critical initial flaw size (CIFS) analysis conducted by NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) for the Upper Stage Simulator (USS) of the Ares I-X vehicle. A full CIFS analysis for the CM-to-SM flange-to-skin weld was not performed because the full flight spectrum was not provided and was not necessary to answer the question posed by the Ares I-X Project. Instead, an approach was developed to determine if the crack growth due to the pad stay and rollout components of the flight spectrum would adversely influence the CIFS. The approach taken used a number of conservative assumptions that eliminated the need for high-fidelity analyses and additional material testing, but still provided a bounding solution for the uncertainties of the problem. The results from this analysis indicate that the LC-2 pad stay and rollout spectrum components would not produce significant fatigue crack growth on the CM-to-SM flange-to-skin weld. Thus, from a fatigue crack growth standpoint, no stabilization is required to reduce the LC-2 pad stay and rollout cyclic stresses on the CM-to-SM flange-to-skin weld

    Evaluation of a Small-Crack Monitoring System

    A new system has been developed to obtain fatigue crack growth rate data from a series of images acquired during fatigue testing of specimens containing small surface cracks that initiate at highly-polished notches. The primary benefit associated with replica-based crack growth rate data methods is preserving a record of the crack configuration during the life of the specimen. Additionally, this system has the benefits of both reducing time and labor, and not requiring introduction of surface replica media into the crack. Fatigue crack growth rate data obtained using this new system are found to be in good agreement with similar results obtained from surface replicas

    Investigation of Cracks Found in Helicopter Longerons

    Four cracked longerons, containing a total of eight cracks, were provided for study. Cracked regions were cut from the longerons. Load was applied to open the cracks, enabling crack surface examination. Examination revealed that crack propagation was driven by fatigue loading in all eight cases. Fatigue crack initiation appears to have occurred on the top edge of the longerons near geometric changes that affect component bending stiffness. Additionally, metallurigical analysis has revealed a local depletion in alloying elements in the crack initiation regions that may be a contributing factor. Fatigue crack propagation appeared to be initially driven by opening-mode loading, but at a crack length of approximately 0.5 inches (12.7 mm), there is evidence of mixed-mode crack loading. For the longest cracks studied, shear-mode displacements destroyed crack-surface features of interest over significant portions of the crack surfaces

    Parameter identifiability in a class of random graph mixture models

    We prove identifiability of parameters for a broad class of random graph mixture models. These models are characterized by a partition of the set of graph nodes into latent (unobservable) groups. The connectivities between nodes are independent random variables when conditioned on the groups of the nodes being connected. In the binary random graph case, in which edges are either present or absent, these models are known as stochastic blockmodels and have been widely used in the social sciences and, more recently, in biology. Their generalizations to weighted random graphs, either in parametric or non-parametric form, are also of interest in many areas. Despite a broad range of applications, the parameter identifiability issue for such models is involved, and previously has only been touched upon in the literature. We give here a thorough investigation of this problem. Our work also has consequences for parameter estimation. In particular, the estimation procedure proposed by Frank and Harary for binary affiliation models is revisited in this article

The results of a feasibility study show that examination of surface replicas with a scanning electron microscope can result in the detection of cracks as small as 0.005 inch, and surface flaws as small as 0.001 inch, for the flowliner material

    Consumption-Based Conservation Targeting: Linking Biodiversity Loss to Upstream Demand through a Global Wildlife Footprint.

    Although most conservation efforts address the direct, local causes of biodiversity loss, effective long-term conservation will require complementary efforts to reduce the upstream economic pressures, such as demands for food and forest products, which ultimately drive these downstream losses. Here, we present a wildlife footprint analysis that links global losses of wild birds to consumer purchases across 57 economic sectors in 129 regions. The United States, India, China, and Brazil have the largest regional wildlife footprints, while per-person footprints are highest in Mongolia, Australia, Botswana, and the United Arab Emirates. A US$100 purchase of bovine meat or rice products occupies approximately 0.1 km2 of wild bird ranges, displacing 1-2 individual birds, for 1 year. Globally significant importer regions, including Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, and France, have large footprints that drive wildlife losses elsewhere in the world and represent important targets for consumption-focused conservation attention
